Question for guys.... (girls can answer too if they want)?

Is it true that guys really want the girl to ask him out first? because to me that sounds really backwards and i dont like that (which is why i dont like sadie hawkin's dance)....but i've loved a guy at my school for 3 years and there's a rumor that he likes me...but im not too sure. i really want to go with him to homecoming, but i don't want to be the one that asks, because that's his job (lol). so are there any tips you could give me to sort of...hint the fact that i like him? guys are confusing, but apparently girls are too...hm. thanks in advance
