Why is Nikola Tesla not mentioned much in American History?

I am reading how brilliant this man is. The first time I heard of him, was in a movie called "The Prestige", with Hugh Jackman. I didn't even think he was a real person until I googled him. I don't recall him being mentioned in history books or learning about him in school. He seems to be the real father of electricity. Maybe he is mentioned now, or maybe I just forgot? Any input is welcome :)
