Is it a good idea to play the piano at a mall?

If the mall office is cool with it, yes. Be sure you have enough music to cover the time you plan to be there. You can't walk in with 15 minutes worth of music and pack up. Expect to play two to four hours with a couple of short breaks (which probably means pack up for your breaks, or hire security to watch over your gear.)
